The Don Papa brand name is a tribute to a historical figure who fought for the liberation of the Philippines from Spanish rule in the late 19th century, Dionisio Magbuelas, commonly known as Papa Isio.

The brand was created by Stephen Carroll for the Bleeding Heart Company. It claims to be the world's first single island rum from the Philippines. Don Papa Small Batch Rum is made from sugar cane from the island of Negros in the Philippines, distilled in traditional pot stills and aged for 7 years in oak barrels from American bourbon. Its bouquet offers accents of vanilla, honey, candied fruit, fresh mandarins and apricots, toffee, cinnamon and raisins.
