The story of Varela Hermanos S.A. and Abuelo rum dates back to 1908, when a Spanish immigrant, Don José Varela Blanco, started the first San Isidro sugar factory in the Panama town of Pesé.
Distillation of spirit from fermented sugar cane juice commenced there in 1936. The Abuelo brand was launched in 1976, when a new, modern spirit distillation line, together with modern, stainless steel distillation column system, was installed there. Today Varela Hermanos S.A. is one of the leading spirits manufacturers in Panama. It is also one of the very few that run their own sugar cane plantations.
Abuelo Añejo is a standard expression of the Abuelo brand. It is a vatting of spirits that matured in oak casks, following which they are carefully blended together. Its bouquet offers notes of vanilla, caramel, leather, molasses, a hint of cherries and oak.
