Dalwhinnie began in 1897 as the Strathspey Distillery, using its current name since 1905. The plant is owned by Diageo and has a capacity to produce just over 2 million litres of distillate per year.
Dalwhinnie is a key ingredient in Buchanan's blends , the most famous single malt version being the 15 year old, promoted since 1988 in the now historic Classic Malts series . Dalwhinnie 25 year old 1989 Vintage is a 2015 offering, part of the group's annual Special Releases . The whisky spent a quarter of a century in refill bourbon hogshead casks before being bottled at cask strength in 5,916 bottles.
Aroma: quite mild, grassy-floral, blooming meadow, apples and pears, oranges, lemon peel, honey-roasted almonds and a hint of hay.
Taste: sweet, fruity with distinct notes of cinnamon and cloves, cooked apples and pears, watermelon, vanilla, honey, breakfast cereals and a delicate bitterness of oak.
Finish: quite long, sweet breakfast cereal, milk chocolate, ripe orchard fruit and a hint of hay.
