Crater Lake Spirits (Bendistillery) located in Bend, Oregon started operations in 1996. The company has been known for their gin and vodka and Crater Lake Rye is a recent addition to the range (2015). The whiskey has been distilled with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley and very likely sourced from MGP (formerly known as Lawrenceburg Distillers of Indiana). Crater Lake Rye is bottled at 40% abv and without age statement but according to the distillery the whiskey spent one year in wood. The short period of maturation “helps to preserve the spicy, fruity character of the grain”.

Nose: pretty light and spicy, white pepper, ginger, cinnamon, caramel, touch of geranium flower and hint of nail polish remover.

Palate: slightly spirity, cinnamon, pepper, toasted rye bread, caramel, grapefruits and notes of charred oak.

Finish: medium long, warming, cinnamon, pepper, rye bread and touch of charred oak.
