The Havana Club brand was founded in Cuba in 1934.The rums of this brand were produced by the family-owned company José Arechabala S.A.Havana Club rums were sold in Cuba and exported to the U.S..
After the Cuban Revolution, the Arechabal family was forced to emigrate in 1960, and the brand itself was nationalized. In 1972, attempts were made to revive the brand, focusing on the Soviet market and the countries of Eastern Europe. In 1993, the Cuban government began a partnership with the French company Pernod Ricard and established Corporación Cuba Ron, in which both parties hold equal stakes.Meanwhile, a rival company, Bacardi, having purchased the original Havana Club rum recipe from the Arechabala family, also began producing rum under the same brand name in 1994.Bacardi's products were intended for the U.S. market, which has been closed to Cuban goods since the Cuban Revolution.A legal battle over the rights to the brand is underway, but that hasn't stopped the products bearing its name from conquering global markets and the hearts of rum lovers.
