Product description
Château Laroque is one of those places in Saint-Émilion where history and the wine-growing landscape intertwine like successive vintages in a cellar. The first mentions of the estate date back to the 12th century, when a fortified tower was erected on a limestone plateau to guard the road leading to the town; its remains have survived to this day, and the Classicist palace we know today was built in the 17th century on the initiative of the Marquis de Rochefort-Lavie.The estate has belonged to the Beaumartin family since 1935, and a new chapter began in 2015 when David Suire was entrusted with the winemaking—since then, Laroque has been steadily climbing the quality rankings. It is the largest vineyard in all of Saint-Émilion (61 ha), majestically situated on red and chestnut-colored clays resting on the famous Asterian limestone; on the terraces and slopes, there is also very chalky, bluish clay—a terroir that imparts a stony energy, tension, and salty minerality to the wine. The Beaumartin family remains the owner, and Suire is spearheading the “return to glory” initiative.
On a day-to-day basis, Laroque works primarily with Merlot (approx..87–88% of the vineyard), complemented by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation takes place in traditional concrete tanks, and the first wine is typically aged in about half new barrels and half used barrels. The scale is significant—on average, about 130,000 are bottled here.bottles—but the wine retains the aristocratic character of the limestone plateau.
