Product description
The E. Guigal winery was founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, located in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation.Ampuis and its surroundings consist of steep terraces along the Rhône with soils of schist and granite origin, containing elements of granite and quartzite in places—this is a classic habitat of the northern Rhône Valley.Guigal is best known for producing great Côte-Rôtie wines—including the famous single-vineyard cuvées La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque, which rank among the world’s best.As the business grew, the Guigal family expanded its vineyards and acquired other domaines (such as Vidal-Fleury and Domaine de Bonserine), which allowed them to operate both as a producer and a négociant. An interesting fact is that Guigal has also operated its own barrel-making workshop (tonnellerie) since 2003, which gives it control over the quality of the wood used to age its wines.
The E. Guigal Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge 2018 is a classic blend from the southern section of the Rhône Valley, composed of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre (50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre). The production process involves temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration, which bring out the intensity of the aromas and yield high-quality extracts. In addition, the wine is aged for about 18 months in oak barrels, which gives it structure, finesse, and depth. Thanks to careful grape selection and a long aging process, this Côtes du Rhône from Guigal displays remarkable harmony between fruit, spices, and tannins—it’s far more than just an average “everyday” wine from the region.
Appearance:
The color of this vintage is a deep, dark red with ruby highlights, slightly translucent at the edges. It has a glossy appearance, which suggests that the extract is well concentrated.
Aroma:
The nose is dominated by juicy fruits—cherries, blueberries, and raspberries—with accompanying notes of spices (pepper, Provençal herbs). In addition, there are subtle notes of vanilla and oak (from barrel aging) that add complexity.
Taste:
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and round, with delicately silky tannins and a well-structured acidity that maintains its freshness. The finish leaves a pleasant aftertaste of red fruits blended with a hint of spices and oak-inspired notes.
Culinary pairings:
This wine pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine—for example, with roasted vegetables, red meat dishes, or lamb. Thanks to its structure and fruity character, it also pairs elegantly with aged cheeses, especially those of moderate intensity.
