Product description
Bunnahabhain is a medium-sized distillery (2.7 million litres of distillate capacity) located on the Isle of Islay. Until the mid-1960s
Bunnahabhain produced a smoky and peaty whisky before distilling from unpeated malted barley for the next three decades. Today, around 35% of annual production is from malt with phenols at 35-45ppm. Official ‘peated’ Bunnahabhain releases are marketed as Mòine, while independent publishers use the Staoisha brand (named after the Staoisha Loch a few miles from the distillery). This one, distilled in 2013, was aged in Oloroso sherry butts (first fill) for 9 years and bottled by Signatory Vintage in The Decanter Collection.
Nose: sherry and peat smoke, iodine, grilled pork neck, caramel, toffee, dried plums, blood oranges, raisins, black pepper and a trace of campfire ash.
Palate: peat smoke, dried apricots, raisins, smoked plums, roasted nuts, salted caramel, mocha, cinnamon, notes of tobacco, sherry and oak.
Finish: quite long, with notes of peat smoke, dried fruit, smoked meat, pepper and barbecue sauce.
