Product description
Laphroaig has been the most popular island whisky for years, closing 2022 with sales of 3.8 million bottles.
In spring 2023, the company announced a new series, Laphroaig Elements, whose successive editions are to highlight the stages of production of the local single malt. In the case of Elements 1.0, 100% malted barley was used on the island, and the mashing process used two 51/2 ton batches and one 81/2 ton batch (two 51/2 ton batches are the rule). Fermentation lasted 55 hours. Laphroaig normally distills a semi-cloudy wort, in this case a cloudy wort was added (the latter highlights the smoke and peat elements). This experiment combined elements of production from years ago with those used today.
Nose: peat, sweet smoke, sea breeze and seaweed, caramel, vanilla, toffee, smoked meat, grilled pineapple, eucalyptus drops, herbal mixture and a bit of ash.
Palate: lots of smoke, iodine, salted caramel, vanilla, pineapple, peaches, mango, pink grapefruit, some anise and lemongrass and toasted oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of peat smoke and ash, tropical fruit, smoked meat, a pinch of pepper and oak.
