Bushmills has been in third place in the Irish whiskey sales ranking for years – in 2021 it recorded sales of over 10 million bottles, while the category leader, Jameson, sold 115 million bottles, and number 2, Tullamore Dew, sold 18 million.
Since 2014, the distillery has been owned by Casa Cuervo, the producer of José Cuervo tequila, which has expanded the plant, raising its production capacity to 9 million liters of alcohol per year. The Bushmills brand includes both single malt and blended whiskey. The latest entry in the basic offer (2022) is the Bushmills 12 years old presented here. This triple-distilled single malt, after a basic maturation period in bourbon and sherry barrels, was finished for 6 to 9 months in Marsala barrels.
Nose: malty and fruity, red apples, peaches, dark grapes, plums, vanilla, caramel, a touch of ginger and white pepper, traces of wax and potpourri.
Palate: honeyed breakfast cereal, dried apples and pears, raisins, vanilla, caramel, roasted peanuts, cinnamon, white pepper and sherry-soaked oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of sweet dried fruit, vanilla, caramel, roasted nuts and oak.
