Hazelburn Distillery operated in Campbeltown from 1825 to 1925.
Roughly 70 years later J.&A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd, the owners of Springbank Distillery brought the brand back to life with limited production of triple-distilled, unpeated single malt whisky. Hazelburn single malt was introduced in 2005 and each just a small amount is distilled , in 2022 it was less than 30,000 liters. Needless to say, demand outstrips supply many times over. Here is the latest, 2022 release of 10 years old expression; the whisky was aged exclusively in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 46% abv without chill filtration.
Nose: very smooth, honeycomb, vanilla custard, baked apples and pears, peaches, nougat, cappuccino, toffee, hints of licorice and oak.
Palate: vanilla, milk chocolate, peaches, nectarines, lemon curd, honey-roasted peanuts, hints of licorice and ginger, and subtle oaky dryness.
Finish: medium long, with notes of orchard fruits, vanilla, honey, sweet pastries, mocha, candied ginger and oak.
