The Kavalan brand debuted in 2008 and literarily took whisky world by the storm.
The whisky is produced at the Yuan Shan Distillery built in the city of Yuanshan, in the Northern part of Taiwan in 2005/2006. The hot and humid conditions accelerate the aging process but also increase angel’s share up to 12% annually. Within the last several years the distillery expanded twice (2015 and 2017) and is currently equipped with 20 stills capable of producing 9 million liter of sprit per annum. The Solist range, consisting of single cask expressions aged in various types of wood, was launched in the late 2009. Here is Kavalan distilled in March 2017, aged in ex-Madeira cask no. D 170317058A and bottled at natural strength of 58.6% abv. The cask yielded 211 bottles.
Nose: blackberries, plums, black cherries, red grapes, honey, milk chocolate, cinnamon, clove, white pepper, hints of tobacco and leather.
Palate: slightly oily, mixed berries, raisins, cappuccino, toffee, walnuts, black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, tobacco and toasted oak.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of ripe berries, nougat, toffee, milk chocolate, cappuccino, cinnamon, tobacco and oak.
