Renowned distribution company Douglas Laing & Co. was owned by brothers Stewart and Fred Laing until 2013, but after 40 years of success the brothers decided to split the company assets and operate separately.
The Old Malt Cask line is now owned by Hunter Laing & Co., of which Stewart is chairman. The Blair Athol on display here, distilled in September 2010, spent over 12 years in a sherry butt no. HL 19716. Bottled in October 2022 at natural colour, without chill filtration and at 50% abv in an edition of 730 bottles. Blair Athol is one of a handful of Scottish distilleries with a history spanning four centuries (founded in 1798). It is now owned by Diageo and, equipped with two pairs of stills, can produce 2.8 million litres of distillate per year.
Nose : honey, caramel, raspberries, blackberries, red apples, walnuts, black tea, a pinch of pepper, a mint leaf and traces of forest floor.
Taste : toffee, caramel, milk chocolate, mixed nuts, multi-berry jam on toast, allspice, black pepper and oak.
Finish: quite long, with notes of milk chocolate, roasted nuts, summer berries, herbs and oak.
