With global sales of over 3 million cases a year, The Famous Grouse is in the top ten most popular Scotch whiskies and is also the most popular blended whisky in its native Scotland.
The brand debuted in 1896 as The Grouse, and was renamed The Famous Grouse in 1905. Its key components are The Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes, with Tamdhu, Glengoyne and Bunnahabhain rounding out the range. The new century has seen several excellent new versions of The Famous Grouse, including The Naked Grouse, which is presented here. Blended from single malts aged almost exclusively in sherry casks, it debuted in 2011, and won a silver medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition two years later. It was succeeded by The Naked Grouse Blended Malt in 2017.
Aroma: malty and fruity, raisins, dried apricots and figs, milk chocolate, vanilla, sugared nuts, a pinch of pepper and oak.
Palate: quite strong sherry notes, raisins, prunes, milk chocolate, orange jam, a pinch of pepper and cinnamon and some oak.
Finish : medium long, with notes of dried berries, toffee, caramel, cocoa powder and oak.
