Yuan Shand Distillery, producer of the exquisite Kavalan whisky, is based in Yilan County, Taiwan.
Built in 2005 by King Car Industrial Company, it won 180 medals and awards in its first decade, which in 2015 encouraged the owners to increase production capacity from 1.5 to 4.5 million liters. In 2017, the number of stills was already up to 20, and the distillation capacity exceeded 9 million liters of alcohol per year. Kavalan Concertmaster debuted in 2009 with the Port Cask Finish edition. The one presented here was composed of distillates aged in its own refill casks and finished in sherry casks. In 2020, this whisky won a gold medal in the International Spirit Challenge competition.
Nose : mild, vanilla, toffee, crème brûlée, milk chocolate, sultanas, roasted nuts, dried cherries and apricots and a pinch of nutmeg.
Palate: delicate notes of sherry, chocolate-coated raisins, dried mango and dates, honeyed almonds, caramel, allspice and light oak notes.
Finish : medium long, with notes of citrus, raisins, vanilla, caramel and a drop of balsamic vinaigrette.
