Paul John single malt is produced by John Distilleries in Goa, on the western coast of India.
The company was founded in 1992 and originally produced brandy and blended whiskies. The single pair of pot stills was installed in 2008 and four years later Paul John single malt debuted in Europe. The company distills from locally grown barley, for peated expressions imports peat from Scotland. The current core range contains five single malts, including three peated. Paul John Peated Select Cask was introduced in 2013 and immediately caught attention of whisky aficionados. It has been aged in ex-bourbon casks and bottled unchill-filtered at generous 55.5% abv.
Nose: peaty, smoky and earthy, forest floor, eucalyptus, hints of oranges and limes, honey, vanilla, touches of cocoa powder and oriental spice.
Palate: smoke and peat balanced with tropical fruit sweetness, bananas, mangos, oranges, vanilla, brown sugar, honey and subtle spicy notes.
Finish: medium long, smoky, with notes of tropical fruits and dark chocolate.
