Product description
Lagavulin is probably not a distillery that needs much introduction. Situated on the Isle of Islay, it produces one of the most highly regarded single malts.
The distillery’s core offering lists just three versions – 12-year-old Cask Strength, 16-year-old and Distillers Edition (finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks). Diageo, Lagavulina’s owner, refuses to sell barrels of whisky to brokers, so independent editions are virtually non-existent. In 1998, the Italian company Moon Import acquired several casks of Lagavulina, distilled 1988, and included it in its Horae Solaris series. This collector’s edition consisted of 1,300 bottles. Moon Import, based in Genoa, has been operating since 1980 and specialises in high-end wines and spirits.
Nose: very elegant, slightly less smoke and iodine than in the official versions, sea breeze, damp beach sand, apples, gooseberries, grapes, almonds, milk chocolate and a delicate whiff of peat smoke.
Palate : well balanced, green apples, grapefruit, quince jelly, a hint of tobacco, seaweed salad, white pepper, salted almonds and peat.
Finish: long, a combination of green fruits, almonds and peat.
