Macallan 78 Year Old The Red Collection (Bottled 2020) Bottle No. 595 / 42.2%

The Macallan 78 years old,
The Red Collection / 42.2%

In October 2020, Macallan Distillery provided a lot of excitement for whisky collectors with the release of "The Red Collection.". It consists of six Macallans, the youngest 40 years old, while the oldest is 78 years old.

Red has a special significance in Macallan's history, starting with the name of the founder, Alexander Reid (the word "Reid" is used by the Scots to describe redheads), through Roderick Kemp, who released the "Choice Old" series in 1903 and, to emphasize its uniqueness, packaged it in cartons printed in red (standard Macallan whisky was packaged in cartons printed in black), to Allan Shiach, who in 1980, for similar reasons, decorated rare vintage editions of 1938, 1940 and 1950 with a red ribbon. Each bottle in the new collection is presented in a case made of Spanish oak, the same in which Macallan is aged, lined with red Scottish leather from luxury goods manufacturer Bridge of Weir Leather. The doyen presented here, Macallan 78 years old, the oldest whisky of all time, bears the signature of Sarah Burgess, holding the title of "Lead Whisky Maker for the Macallan". (Note from Mrs. Burgess.)

Aroma

fruit cocktail, apples, peaches and grapes, lime and a touch of verbena. Notes of antique oak and high-grade leather intertwine with dark chocolate and dried fruits, dates and raisins; a fragrant vanilla cake enters behind them.

TASTE

warming notes of ginger and nutmeg prepare to repel the offensive of raisins, dates, dried plums and almonds; oak in the role of peacemaker, but the sweetness of toffee and baked apples weakens its position somewhat.

FINISH

long and reflective, a reminiscence of all aromas and flavors. An extraordinary experience.
