Douglas Laing & Co., one of the most reputable independent bottling companies, used to be run by two Laing brothers, Stuart and Fred. In 2013, after almost 40 years of working together, the brothers parted their ways and split the old company portfolio.
Old & Rare, Douglas Laing prestigious series, is now part of newly formed Hunter Laing & Co. with Stuart at the helm. The Bowmore presented here was distilled in December 1987 and aged in a single refill hogshead. Bottled in August 2013 at natural strength of 48.5% abv and without chill-filtration with an outrun of 226 bottles.
Nose: sweet and moderately smoky, strawberry jam, oranges, cantaloupe, whiffs of sea breeze, hints of lavender and little oak in the background.
Palate: sweet with peat smoke lingering in the background, vanilla, mixed berries marmalade, violet liquor, licorice, oak, hints of salt and pepper.
Finish: medium long with notes of berries, vanilla, licorice, pepper and brine.
