Tomatin Distillery was founded in 1897. Several expansions carried out from the 1950s to 1970s made it the largest distillery in Scotland but the success was short-lived and in 1985 Tomatin filled for bankruptcy. New lease of life was provided by Japanese capital and the following year the distillery welcomed new owners, Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co. The Japanese downsized the operation and focused on production mainly for blending industry. The new Millennium brought different approach, Tomatin has been expanding its product range and the brand annual sales increased to 460 000 bottles. Tomatin 14 years old Port Wood Finish was launched in 2014, it contains whisky aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished for about a year in Tawny Port pipes.
