Scapa Distillery was founded in 1885 and over time passed through many owners. In 1954 it was acquired by Hiram Walker & Sons and became closely associated with the Ballantine brand. In 1994 the distillery was mothballed in ruinous state and many believed that Scapa’s history is coming to an end. Fortunately that was not the case and major refurbishment took place in two stages, 2004 and 2005. Now Scapa works at full capacity and produces about 1.3 million liters of spirit per annum. The 16 years old expression was introduced in 2008 as a replacement of 14 years old and caught a lot of attention. Most Scapa aficionados believe that it was the best official bottling ever released.
