With annual sales of over one million cases Tullamore Dew is the second best selling brand of Irish whiskey after Jameson (the third one, Bushmills, sells around 800,000 cases).
Tullamore Dew was distilled at Daly’s Distillery (it was pure pot still whiskey) until 1954. When the distillery closed the production was moved to Power’s Distillery in Dublin, then Midleton Distillery and later Bushmills Distillery. Since 2010 the brand is owned by William Grant & Sons, who built a new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore village. Tullamore Dew presented here is triple distilled single malt aged in traditional oak casks for over 18 years then finished in ex-Oloroso sherry butts, ex-port pipes, ex-Madeira drums and ex-bourbon barrels for at least six months. Less than 2500 bottles were produced.
Nose: fruity and spicy, sweet cereals, baked apples, sherry-soaked raisins, candied orange peel, pineapple, cinnamon, vanilla and dash of allspice.
Palate: rich and fruity, dried apricots and figs, raisins, sultanas, oranges, cinnamon, candied ginger, honey-roasted almonds, vanilla and cocoa.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of caramel, milk chocolate, raisins, tobacco, cinnamon and pepper.
