In 2000 the independent bottler Murray McDavid bought struggling Bruichladdich Distillery.
Soon the charismatic global ambassador of Bowmore, Jim McEwan came onboard and after short transition period Bruichladdich became a model distillery for the 21st Century. The Legacy is a series of six expressions released annually from 2002 until 2007. Here we have the initial release, 1966 Vintage aged for 36 years in American oak hogsheads. The casks for the edition were personally selected by Jim McEwan. The whisky was bottled unchill-filtered with natural strength of 40.6% abv with an outrun of 1500 bottles.
Nose: very intense, peaches, plums, mango, bananas, caramel, buttered toast, vanilla cream, hay, polished oak, dusty library and distant whiff of sea air.
Palate: rich with very pleasant oakiness, apples, peaches, grapefruits, raisins, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, cinnamon, candied ginger and just a pinch of salt.
Finish: long and complex, vanilla, honey, orchard fruits, oak and just a touch of spice.
