The name Glen Mhor translates to ‘Great Glen’ and very likely refers to the glen, which is home to Loch Ness. The distillery was founded in 1892 by John Birnie (manager at Glen Albyn Distillery) and Charles Mackinlay and started whisky distillation in December 1894. Both distilleries operated under Mackinlay & Birnie Ltd ownership from 1920 until 1972, when the company was acquired by DCL. Glen Mhor ceased operations in 1893 and three years later the site became home to supermarket and parking. Gordon & MacPhail have been releasing Glen Mhor single malt for decades, here we have 1980 Vintage expression, part of Rare Vintage range. The whisky spent over 30 years in refill sherry butts and was bottled at 43% abv in 2011.
