Chivas Regal Ultis XX
The Chivas Brothers Company (Pernod Ricard) released its first blended whisky in 1909. It was a 25-year-old blend of distillates, which included more malt whiskies than had previously been the case when putting together typical blends. This whisky was meant to offer a more rich, exquisite and complex character, and is still considered the first luxury blended whisky today. Over time, the Chivas Regal family expanded to include the all-too-familiar 12yo edition, which for many for many decades marked the true frontier of exquisite whiskeys meant to be savored.
In 2016, the Chivas Regal brand expanded with the first widely promoted and readily available malt whisky blend, Chivas Regal Ultis. Today it was time for her sister.
Chivas Regal Ultis XX is a 20-year-old blended whisky, compiled from malt whiskies from Strathisla, Allt-a-Bhainne, Braeval, Longmorn and Tormore distilleries, and grain whisky from Strathclyde distillery - meaning everything stays in the family, each of the distilleries mentioned is owned by the Chivas Brothers holding company, owned by Pernod Ricard. Bottom line, Ultis XX is the familiar Ultis from 2016, expanded to include a cereal component from Strathclyde.
In its bouquet Chivas Regal Ultis XX offers notes of red apples, raspberry jam, fresh vanilla sticks and sweet, buttery toffee. In the taste we can expect accents of honey, milk chocolate and compote pears, topped with sugar syrup.
Sandy Hyslop, chivas Regal's master buyer, says that Ultis XX is a tribute to the five generations of master buyers who worked on the brand before him. And just as each single malt whisky used to compose this blend contributed to its complexity, each of the master blenders contributed in their own way to the unique style of the Chivas blend.
