Product description
Applejack, also known as “America’s First Drink,” has been produced by the Laird family since the late 17th century.
Alexander Laird came to America in 1698 from Scotland and settled in New Jersey. In his native country, he acquired some distilling experience, which resulted in a career in the new world. Here, however, his main distilling input was apples. The distillery operated during the American War of Independence, and George Washington himself reportedly asked the Lairds to share the family recipe for apple brandy. Finally, in 1780, they received a distilling license from the American government. After the end of Prohibition, the business expanded to include two more distilleries, and apple brandy production was moved to the orchard region of Virginia. In the early 1970s, due to changing market tastes and a shift towards milder alcoholic beverages, the company changed the Applejack formula - it is now a blend of apple brandy (around 30%) and grain alcohol (70%).
