Port Charlotte SC:01, the fifth edition in Bruichladdich’s illustrious “Cask Exploration” series, hits the market in early 2022.
It is also the first whisky in the series to be distilled exclusively from island-grown barley. The project involved seven farmers, using Concerto, Propino, Publican and Oxbridge varieties. The malt phenol level was 40ppm. Port Ellen SC:01 is the result of an unusual blend. The first batch was matured in sherry butts and finished in first-fill Sauternes casks. The second was matured in second-fill American oak casks and finished in second-fill Sauternes casks. Finally, the third was matured in first-fill and refill bourbon casks and finished in fresh Sauternes casks.
Nose : sweet and smoky, spring meadow, apricots, peaches, honeydew melon, pineapple, vanilla, brown sugar, marzipan, notes of lemon pepper and toasted oak.
Palate : peat smoke, sea breeze, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, caramel, toffee, ripe apricots and nectarines, candied orange peel, salted almonds and oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of peat smoke, sea breeze, apricots, citrus, vanilla and toasted oak.
