Product description
Wemyss Vintage Malts was founded in 2005 by William Wemyss, who owns vineyards in Australia and Provence, tea plantations in Kenya and Kingsbarns Distillery in the Lowlands.
The Wemyss are one of the most distinguished families of the region, related to Lord Macduff, ruler of Fife. Wemyss Malts uses an unconventional marketing strategy, using names for their whisky editions that correspond to their aromatic and flavor profiles. The Bunnahabhain presented here, described as “Oils of patchouli and sandalwood,” was distilled in 1988 and aged in a sherry butt for over three decades. Bottled at 46% abv in 2020 in an edition of 583 bottles. (Producer’s note.)
Nose: 31 years spent in a sherry cask have released strong aromas of cherries, currants and ginger cake. After a while, the scent of antique furniture and oils of patchouli and sandalwood appear, enriched by the breath of the earth.
Palate: Complex and ever-changing, orange oil, stewed berries, sweet rye bread, hints of heather and oak. This whisky needs some time to fully open up.
Finish: long, with notes of dark oak fruit, tannins and cigar.
