Grand Marnier is a liqueur composed of cognac and distilled essence of bitter oranges by Louis-Alexander Mariner Lapostolle.
It debuted in 1880 as Curaçao Mariner, but at the urging of friend and famous hotelier César Ritz Mariner Lapostolle soon changed its name to Grand Marnier. Cuvée de Centenaire, in turn, is a creation from 1927 released to celebrate the centenary of Maison Marnier Lapostolle. It is a blend of XO cognacs distilled from grapes from the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne growing regions (aged for up to 25 years) and the essence of Curaçao oranges. The cognac content reaches 82%. Each batch of Cuvée du Centenaire, after mixing the ingredients, is subjected to a two-year marriage in large oak barrels. This liqueur was first served at a reception hosted by the Belgian King Leopold II at his residence on the French Riviera.
