Special Releases is a limited series of Diageo whiskies released every autumn.
It debuted in 2002 and consists of the best and rarest single malt and single grain whiskies from the group's portfolio bottled in cask strength. The 2019 release included 8 single malts, from the youngest, 12-year-old Cragganmore and Lagavulin to the oldest in the list, 30-year-old Dalwhinnie. Four of them (Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Talisker and Lagavulin) are whiskies that make up the legendary Classic Malts series (alongside Oban and Glenkinchie). Lagavulin 12 years old is a permanent element of Special Releases, the 2019 edition contains whisky aged in refilled American oak barrels.
Nose: peat smoke, tarred ropes, seaweed, forest floor, lemons, green apples, vanilla, white chocolate, notes of white pepper and oak.
Palate : sweet and smoky, vanilla, sugar syrup, salted caramel, peaches, apples, lemons, pepper, cinnamon, a hint of leather and a light vegetable note (asparagus).
Finish : very long, with notes of peat smoke, cocoa powder, white pepper, lemon peel, tobacco and sea breeze.
