Basil Hayden's Bourbon debuted in 1992, alongside Knob Creek and Baker's, and with them joined Jim Beam's original small-batch series.
The whiskey is named after one of Kentucky's first distillers (called Old Grand Dad by friends), who developed a mash formula with a high rye content. Since 1987, this bourbon has been produced by Jim Beam Distillers according to a formula that is close to the original and differs significantly from Beam's standard recipe. In the latter, rye accounts for 15% with 75% corn, while Basil Hayden's lists 60% corn and 30% rye. In both cases, malted barley accounts for 10% of the. While for the first years Basil Hayden's was an 8-year-old bourbon, the new editions are bottled without an age designation.

The whiskey is named after Baker Beam, a cousin of Booker Noe, who began working at the family distillery in Clermont as a night watchman and ended up in the position of distiller. From the label we read the patron's statement: "my bourbon, according to our tradition, contains all the family secrets in the bottle, not on the label; these are the secrets and experiences of six generations of distillers that await the next discovery.". Baker's is aged for 7 years and bottled at the patron's preferred strength of 107 proof. While the barrels used in Booker's editions of bourbon always come from the middle floors of the warehouses, Baker's uses a small number of barrels from the top floor of the warehouse.
