Despite operating seven days a week, Strathmill remains a relatively unknown distillery. Built in 1891, it was acquired by London gin producer W. & A. Gilbey four years later.
When the latter merged with United Wine Traders, owner of Justerini & Brooks, in 1962, Strathmill was immediately included in the J&B blend formula. Currently, the plant belongs to Diageo and, equipped with two pairs of stills, produces over 2.5 million liters of distillate per year, almost all of which goes to the group's blends. In 2014, Strathmill debuted in the prestigious Diageo Special Releases series. This was a whisky distilled in 1988 and aged in American white oak barrels for 25 years. The edition consisted of 2,700 bottles, with the whisky bottled at natural alcohol content, 52.4%.
