Connemara Cask Strength Peated / 57.9% / 0.7l
- Connemara, the only Irish peated whiskey, is produced at Cooley Distillery, owned by Beam Suntory since 2012.
Product description
Connemara is the only Irish whiskey with a smoky and peaty profile. It is produced in the Cooley distillery, which has been part of the Beam Suntory group since 2012.
While Connemara's profile today is far from the usual standards of Irish whiskey, in the past it was nothing out of the ordinary. The Atlantic coast was rich in peat bogs and local distilleries regularly used them; it wasn't until the 19th century that the vast majority of them switched to coal. Connemara debuted in December 1995, with the Cask Strength version joining the range a few years later and released in small batches. The whiskey is distilled from malt imported from Scotland at 20ppm phenols, aged in bourbon barrels and bottled with natural colour and without chill filtration.
Nose: sweet smoke, barley malt, freshly cut grass, lemon peel, vanilla, green apples, white pepper and a hint of sea breeze.
Palate : smoky and sweet, vanilla, breakfast cereal, caramel, baked apples, lemon and orange peel, a pinch of pepper and a light oak bitterness.
Finish: quite long, with notes of peat and smoke, sweet cereal, vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate and a bit of ash.
