The brewery Appenzell, located in Swiss Alps, was established in 1886 by the Lochner family. In 1999 the Lochners started producing whisky following revocation of the federal law banning the distillation of spirits from grain. The whisky is originally matured in ex-beer casks then usually finishes in wine or eau-de-vie casks. Since 2003 the company relies on raw material form the Swiss mountains, the highest cultivated area in Europe. The barley benefits from vitality and strength owing to the extreme conditions. Säntis Finest Selection Edition 9 comprises whisky aged for 4 years in beer barrels and additional 3 years in ex-port casks. Bottled at 48% abv and released in November 2014 with an outrun of 2200 bottles.
Nose: rich, sweet with subtle spiciness, gingerbread, milk chocolate, black cherries, plums, almonds, vanilla, caramel and hint of cinnamon.
Palate: sweet and spicy, prunes, raisins, nougat, cinnamon, hints of pepper and ginger, tobacco, and delicate bitterness of leather and oak.
Finish: long, with notes of dried fruit, cinnamon, leather and oak.
