A single malt whisky made by Nikka Company, distilled at their Yoichi distillery on the northern island of Hokkaido. The Yoichi distillery was founded in 1934 and is the birthplace of the Nikka brand. At Yoichi whisky is made following the traditional methods brought over from Scotland. It is distilled in relatively small copper stills heated by open coal fire, a practice abandoned altogether by Scottish distilleries by now. This expression was composed from spirits that matured for at least 15 years, in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry oak casks. The whisky offers characteristic peaty flavours.
Nose: Delicate and creamy, with nuts, gingerbread, vanilla, cinnamon, tobacco, oak, fresh strawberries, molasses and chocolate.
Palate: Sweet and creamy, with some peat, winter spice, mint, ginger, chocolate, cane sugar, vanilla, blueberries, plums and oak.
Finish: Long and bitterish, with some oak, peat and dark chocolate.
