An exceptional, rare bottling of Ardbeg, one of the mostly sought after by collectors.
The whisky was released in 1996, the year in which Allied Domecq mothballed the distillery and decided to put it on sale. (The buyer, Glenmorangie plc, placed a bid the following year). It is an “old school Ardbeg” distilled back in the 1960s, when the distillery was operating own maltings and malt was exclusively produced on site. Very Old Ardbeg is a vatting of 29 casks, aged for at least 30 years and bottled at 40% abv. It is also one of the very last releases before Glenmorangie plc took over the brand and distillery.
Nose: beautifully balanced, peat smoke, sea breeze, iodine, seaweed, hints of allspice and pepper.
Palate: smooth, initially smoky and spicy, lemon pepper, orange zest, honey, hints of walnuts, oak and brine.
Finish: long, peaty and spicy with a whiff of smoke.
