It is hard to believe but soon the Classic Malts series, an eye-opener for many of todays single malt aficionados, will celebrate its 30th Anniversary. It was 1988 and single malts were barely known outside of Scotland, in fact they were responsible for less than 1% of the global whisky sales. United Distillers decided to choose six single malts to provide a representative selection from Scotland’s whisky production regions and Talisker represented islands excluding Islay. The 10 years old expression was created for that occasion and replaced the previous 8 years old. It was bottled at rather unusual 45.8% abv (an equivalent to 80 British Proof) and almost 3 decades later it remains the most popular expression of Talisker. Here we got the older bottling, we believe from the very beginning of the new Millennium.
Nose: smoky and peppery, with notes of forest floor, hay, moist wool, breakfast cereals, apples, hints of licorice and a whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: lots of peat and smoke, dried herbs, pepper, nutmeg, some seaweed salad, quince jelly, salted almonds, and delicate oaky notes.
Finish: long and peppery, with some salty and oaky notes.
