Compass Box Whisky Company was founded in 2000 by John Glaser, former global marketing director of UDV, predecessor of Diageo. According to the company statement “Oak Cross blended malt offers the best characteristics of both American and French oak aging”. It is a marriage of 60% Clynelish, 20% Dailuaine and 20% Teaninich, all aged in first fill American oak barrels; 40% of the blend goes into innovative hybrid casks featuring heavily toasted new French oak heads and 60% returns into first fill American oak casks. Compass Box is a relatively small company with annual sells of about 180 000 bottles. In 2015 however, John Dewar & Sons, subsidiary of Bacardi, became long-term supplier to Compass Box brand.
