Midleton is by far the biggest Irish distillery producing malt, pot still and grain whiskeys in one facility. Single pot still is the most traditional Irish whiskey; it is distilled from mash made of malted and un-malted barley. Midleton produces different styles of pot still whiskey while adjusting the middle cut separation of from foreshots and feints. The distillery supplies spirit to number of brands including Jameson, the best selling Irish whiskey (5.7 million cases sold in 2016). Here we have truly unique single cask bottling. The whiskey distilled on May 7, 1998 was aged in first fill ex-sherry butt (no. 43233) and bottled at natural strength of 59.7% abv for the Parisian retailer La Maison du Whisky in 2014. The butt yielded 588 bottles.
Nose: strong sherry statement, prunes, dried apricots, cherries, roasted almonds, bitter orange marmalade, vanilla, coriander, hints of leather and toasted oak.
Palate: round and rich, dark chocolate, almonds, hazelnuts, plums, apples, vanilla, cappuccino, licorice, hint of nutmeg and delicate oaky bitterness.
Finish: long and complex, oranges, grapefruits, licorice, toffee and sherried oak.
