The Suntory Company, founded in 1899 in Osaka by Torii Shinjiro, initially sold imported wines. In 1923 construction of the very first Japanese whisky distillery, Yamazaki, commenced. For many years, the company was called Kotobukiya, and was renamed Suntory only in 1963. At present Suntory Holdings owns numerous brands of spirits, beers and soft drinks. As far as the Japanese whisky goes, the major brands belonging to Suntory, or rather its subsidiary, Beam Suntory, include Yamazaki, Hakushu and Hibiki.
Suntory blended whisky was first launched in 1937. At that time it was called simply Suntory Whisky. It has now been replaced by the Hibiki brand.
