In 2003 The Edrington Group sold Bunnahabhain Distillery to Burn Stewart Distillers, owned then by C.L. Financial from Trinidad & Tobago.
By 2010 C.L. Financial was on the verge of bankruptcy desperately looking for a buyer for Burn Stewart and in 2013 the Distell Group from South Africa put a winning bid of £160 million. The 30 years old expression from Douglas Laing is part of the renowned Old Malt Cask selection. The whisky distilled in 1978 was aged in refill ex-sherry butt and bottled in 2009 at 50% abv with an outrun of 566 bottles.
Nose: rich and sweet, barley sugar, toffee, toasted oak, spice, sweet cereals, tropical fruits and a whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: fruity with delicate nuttiness, grapes, pears, honeydew melon, oranges, papaya, aniseed, almonds, cinnamon and a trace of mint.
Finish: long and fruity, sweet spice and oak.
