Unfortunately we are not able to determine any relation between Galileo Galilei and Lowland single malt whisky, yet the famous astronomer’s face adorns the label of this unusual bottling. The Silver Seal bottling of St. Magdalene from June 2009, part of Sestante Collecton, commemorates the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first celestial observations using a telescope (2009 was endorsed by UN and UNESCO as International Year of Astronomy). The whisky distilled in 1982 spent 27 years in a single cask, which yielded 180 bottles at 54% abv.
Nose: mineral with delicate vegetal notes, oranges, limes, wet gravel, vanilla, coffee beans, hints of turnip and parsnip and touch of soot.
Palate: grassy and mineral, pine needles, hay, lemon pepper, grapefruits, orange peel and lingering oaky dryness.
Finish: long, oaky and peppery with hints of hay and tobacco.
