Port Ellen Distillery ceased production in 1983 and remains one of the most mourned closed distilleries. While in the 1990s independent bottlers flooded market with hundreds expressions of Port Ellen today their releases are extremely scarce.
Dun Bheagan is a range of single malt whiskies from Ian Macleod Distillers, owners of Glengoyne and Tamdhu distilleries. The 2006 release of Port Ellen contains whisky distilled in the last year of the distillery operation (1983), aged in ex-sherry butt nr 789 for 23 years and bottled unchill-filtered at natural strength of 45.9% abv. Only 366 bottles were produced.
Nose: wet gravel and sand, peat smoke, hints of iodine, pepper, salt, roasted peanuts, bananas, oranges and touch of butterscotch.
Palate: salted peanuts shrouded with peat smoke, smoked salmon, pepper, candied lemon peel, banana bread and hints of hay.
Finish: fairly long, peaty and nutty, with notes of pepper and smoked fish.
