For every Port Ellen whisky enthusiast the beginnings of the new millennium were glorious times. There were plenty of bottlings of their beloved single malt with the youngest expressions close to 20 years of age.
The 24 years old Port Ellen presented here, part of Signatory Decanter Collection, comprises whisky distilled on September 5, 1978, aged in traditional oak barrels and finished in ex-port cask. Bottled on September 16, 2002 at natural strength of 59.3% abv with an outrun of 792 bottles. It was a second edition of Port Ellen Port Wood Finish released that day, the whisky came from the cask no. 02/159/2.
Nose: peaty and smoky with notes of forest floor, cranberries, apricots, toffee, caramel, hints of pepper and garden herbs and oak.
Palate: initially smoky, soon fruitiness becomes more pronounced, cherries, cranberry relish, salted caramel, hints of seaweed and pepper.
Finish: medium long, smoky and fruity with distinctive oaky notes.
