Gordon & MacPhail, established 1895, is on of the most distinguished independent bottlers of single malt whisky. The company holds thousands of casks of whisky in their warehouses from nearly any distillery. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when single malts remained unknown outside of Scotland G&M bottled them either under license, as part of Distillery Labels series, or as part of several own ranges. Their bottling of Port Ellen 1980 Vintage comprises whisky aged in five casks (no. 5090 +5101-5104) filled on November 19 and bottled in June 1996 at 63.9% abv as part of Cask Strength series.
Nose: grassy and mineral, slightly spirity, with notes of peat and hay, wet gravel, hints of vanilla and milk chocolate, apples and touch of pepper.
Palate: quite spirity (benefits from few drops of water), vanilla, toffee, baked apples, lemon pepper, hints of hay and garden herbs and rather shy peaty notes.
Finish: medium long, with notes of hay, pepper and discreet peatiness.
