Ballechin is an estate in Perthshire, home to the farm distillery, which ceased operations in 1927.
In 2006 Edradour Distillery resurrected the brand with a release of Ballechin # 1, as a part of The Discovery Series. It was young, heavily peated whisky aged solely in first fill Burgundy casks. Batch # 8, Sauternes Cask Matured, was launched in 2013. Alike previous batches, the whisky was bottled at 46% abv with an outrun of 6000 bottles.
Nose: very appealing combination of peat smoke and sweet fruit, apricots, pineapple, gooseberry, traces of almonds and honey.
Palate: nicely balanced, sweet plums, apricots and tangerines shrouded with peat smoke, dash of sweet spice in the background.
Finish: fairly long, nutty and peaty with hints of vanilla.
