Tomintoul is a mid-size distillery, equipped with two pairs of stills produces 3.3 million liters of spirit per annum. Since 2000 it has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers, the company controlled by the Hillman family with most revenue coming from blending operations. Tomintoul is a Kosher Accredited distillery and uses almost exclusively ex-bourbon wood, with a little exception of ex-sherry and ex-port casks employed for finishing maturation. Tomintoul 12 years old Portwood Finish joined the range in 2010, as annual limited release. After being matured in ex-bourbon barrels the whisky spent up to 36 months in ex-port casks. Bottled annually in limited quantities of natural color and without chill-filtration with alcohol content increased to 46% abv.
Nose: fruity and floral, summer meadow, strawberries, plums, milk chocolate, vanilla cream, toffee, steaming cappuccino and touch of brown sugar.
Palate: soft, strawberry jam, cranberry juice, prunes, banana bread, honey, raisins, cinnamon and dash of white pepper.
Finish: medium long, mildly fruity, with notes of walnuts, milk chocolate and hints of mixed spice.
