Tomintoul Distillery has been producing whisky for over half a Century, since 2000 under the ownership of London-based Angus Dundee Distillers. The distillery is running at full capacity, what translates to 3.3 million liters of spirit per annum. The majority of the output still goes into blends but within the last decade new owners significantly expanded the single malt range. The 16 years old was their first new expression (launched 2003), a brainchild of Robert Flemming, the company master distiller, who personally selected the finest ex-bourbon casks for that bottling. Between 2003 and 2010 Tomintoul 16 years old scored four medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
