In 1988 United Distillers (predecessor of Diageo) launched Classic Malts series, which included six most representative Scottish single malts from six regions. Surely, the contenders were the distilleries owned at that time by UD. Ten years later a Distillers Edition followed up, it contained the same six single malts but finished in different types of wood. Lagavulin, the most popular expression of the original series, after spending 16 years in traditional oak barrels was transferred into ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for additional several months. The 1997 Vintage was part of the 2013 Distillers Edition release.
Nose: smoky and sooty with lovely notes of cherries, prunes and orange peel, traces of seaweed and iodine, tobacco, toasted almonds and shy herbal note.
Palate: perfectly balanced, peat, dark chocolate, raisins, dried figs, prunes, honey roasted almonds, licorice, touch of pepper and subtle smoke in the background.
Finish: long, dark chocolate, dried fruit and hints of pepper, shrouded in warm peat smoke.
