Strathisla Distillery was founded in 1786, what makes it the oldest distillery in Northern Scotland. In 1950, after its then owner was convicted of tax evasion, the neglected distillery end up in auction, where for £71,000 was granted new lease of life. New owners, Chivas Bros., then subsidiary of Seagram, after essential renovation resumed production and Strathisla immediately became backbone of Chivas Regal. Due to growing demand for Chivas blends Strathisla was never seriously promoted as single malt, however 12 years old expression has been around since the early 1990s. The packaging was revamped in 2013 and at the same time the alcohol content was reduced to 40% abv.
Nose: fresh and pleasant, malty and fruity, apples, pears, bananas, honey, butterscotch, some pralines, hints of lemon grass and oak.
Palate: malty and fruity, pears, apricots, apples, roasted peanuts, toffee, caramel, raisins, sip of cappuccino, dash of cinnamon and allspice.
Finish: medium long, malty, fresh fruits, mixed nuts and touch of caramel.
